A Community Food Centre for Edmonton

Food4Good and Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC)

Food4Good is working with Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) to build a permanent place for food in Edmonton! They want to bring all their programs together under one roof, and expand what they can offer neighbourhoods in West Edmonton.

Community Food Centres are vibrant community spaces that bring people together to grow, cook, share, and advocate for good food. There are currently eight Community Food Centres across Canada, including The Alex Community Food Centre in Calgary, which opened in 2016.

Food4Good has been working with CFCC through its Good Food Organizations program since 2015. Edmonton would greatly benefit from having access to a Community Food Centre and the programs it offers, including community meals and affordable produce markets, community kitchens and gardens, after-school programs for kids, and peer advocacy support.

Reasons to Reduce Food Waste

• Wasting food costs money and natural resources, including water and land, that are spent in producing, transporting, preparing and buying food
• In Canada, about 30-40% of food produced annually is wasted, ending up in landfills or compost
• Food waste and organics in landfills create large amounts of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas

By reducing the amount of avoidable food waste thrown away, residents can save money, and cut down on the amount of garbage produced at home.  As a City, reducing food waste means that we can increase the amount of waste diverted from landfill.
