Bridge Closures

There is a lot of misinformation floating around about the planned bridge closures for repair work. A lot of people believe five major bridges in Edmonton are being shut down, bringing our downtown to a standstill.
But that’s not true.
Numerous aging bridges in and around Downtown require significant renewal to address safety and functional concerns. This renewal work will prevent any unplanned closures from happening in the future.
A report about this renewal work will be presented to the City Council on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025. You can find the report here.
Currently, FOUR bridges have been chosen for renewal work.
Wellington Bridge (102 Avenue East of 132 Street)
● Wellington Bridge has reached the end of its current useful service life and needs to be replaced
to maintain safe operation.
● The work is being sequenced to align with completion of the accelerated construction of the
Valley Line LRT West project (104 Avenue and 124 Street).
● Construction will begin in late 2025 and take approximately one year to complete. Bridge
opening is expected by the end of 2026, with landscaping completed in 2027.
Dawson Bridge (Rowland Road Across the North Saskatchewan River)
● Dawson Bridge will undergo repairs to extend its current service life. This work will ensure that
the bridge remains in safe working order and will delay the need for a full bridge renewal at this
time.
● Minor traffic impacts are expected starting in summer 2025. These impacts may include
intermittent night or weekend closures to accommodate bridge repair.
● Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025.
Low Level Bridge (Southbound) (Southbound Connors Road Across North Saskatchewan River)
● The southbound structure will undergo maintenance upgrades to extend its service life in
preparation for construction on the northbound structure in 2026.
● This work will require the full closure of the southbound Low Level Bridge starting in late
summer/early fall 2025.
● During construction, southbound traffic will be rerouted to the northbound Low Level Bridge.
● Northbound traffic will be rerouted to the 98 Avenue (James Macdonald) Bridge.
High Level Bridge (109 Street Across North Saskatchewan River)
● Design for the High Level Bridge Renewal is underway.
● Timelines for construction will be determined as design progresses.
